Welcome to the multiverse. Actually no, welcome to the Altiverse; the multiverse is the set of all possible universes, the Altiverse is the set of all universes that contain some version of Earth. Also, the Evil Science Empire (actually called the Binary) and the Evil Magic Empire (actually called HEX) are both trying to take over the Altiverse and remake it in their image, but there's an organization of interdimensional walkers (who are all different universes' versions of the same guy) called InterWorld who are trying to stop both of them and keep the Altiverse in balance between science and magic.
Make any sense? No? You kind of have to read it to understand it, I guess. That said, once you do get it, it does sort of click. Sort of like how I can't really describe the time travel rules in A Tale of Time City.
(Oh, by the way, the interdimensional walkers do so by traveling through an eldritch in-between dimension. It sometimes has giant incomprehensible monsters. One of whom |looks like a color-shifting soap bubble and makes friends with our main character|.)
There are a bunch of sequel hooks, most notably something called FrostNight. The only character who definitely knows what it is is Lord Dogknife (an evil jackal-hyena HEX person), and he's not telling. The library also has the sequels, so we'll see what happens.
Were this a videogame, I'd rate it: T for violence... probably. It would actually be fairly easy to make into a game.
4 stars.
(Endnote: HEX is stated to be ruled by a Council of Thirteen, while the Binary is ruled by an AI called 01101. Interestingly, |"01101" translates to "13" in base 10|.)
